Information on Deadbolts

What are deadbolts?

A deadbolt is an affordable type of lock hardware that provides higher security protection than standard knob locks. The term “deadbolt” refers to a specific lock type. It consists of a steel bolt which when the lock is turned into place is fitted into the door’s jam and strike plate. There is no spring involved. Because the deadbolt fits securely into the door, it provides a great deal of protection against brute force attacks by criminals attempting to gain entry.

Deadbolts come in several different forms and styles that can be chosen depending on your personal preference and the recommendations of a knowledgeable locksmith. The main thing that all deadbolts have in common is that they do not have a spring and that they use a bolt system instead.

Why are deadbolts important?

Deadboltsprovide effective protection for homeowners, and are an integral part of your lock security. Deadbolts are far harder to pick than standard door locks. Techniques such as using a credit card or a bump key to open the bolt are very ineffective. Simply put, deadbolts make a criminal’s job much more difficult.

It’s important that your deadbolts be in good working order for them to be effective against criminal attacks. If your deadbolts are worn down, stick, or are poorly installed, they could be leaving your home at risk and should be replaced by a professional locksmith.

While there are many additional security features that a locksmith can set you up with, a deadbolt is a solid component to a strong foundation of your home protection. Without a solid foundation of high-quality locks protecting your home, you may as well just leave your doors open. Criminals know what to look for as far as vulnerabilities in a home’s protection, and high-quality, secure deadbolts act as a deterrent for many would-be thieves.

Types of Deadbolts

While there are other types of deadbolts out there, these are the most common types that you will find. For more information, talk to a professional locksmith about the most up-to-date options available to you for protecting your home.

Single-Sided Thumb-Turn Deadbolts –

These are the most commonly found type of deadbolts on residential buildings. There is one keyhole on the outside to lock and unlock it, as well as a thumb turn lever on the inside to lock the deadbolt without the key. While simple and affordable, they are very effective. However, if they are used on doors with glass in them, intruders have been known to smash the glass and turn the thumb-turn on the inside.

Double-Sided Deadbolts –

Double-sided deadbolts are similar to single-sided deadbolts in their installation; however, with double-sided deadbolts, as the name suggests, there is a keyhole on either side of the lock. There is no way to open this kind of deadbolt without the physical key. This type of deadbolt is not recommended for homeowners as it can be a dangerous impediment in the case of fire or another emergency in which you need to get out of the house fast.

Rim Deadbolts –

Rim deadbolts are usually seen on some forms of commercial property. They are mounted to the inside of the door, and lock automatically when you shut the door. They are also sometimes seen in certain areas of apartment buildings, but otherwise are not commonly found on residential buildings.

Keyless Deadbolts -

Keyless deadbolts are the newest form of deadbolt security on the market. They utilize either a manual or digital keypad in order to open the lock. A simple pin number replaces the need for a physical key. Keyless deadbolts are very effective in keeping out criminals. The only drawback is if you forget your pin number. Usually they also use a thumb-turn lever on the back to lock the deadbolt when you are inside.
